What to do if you can’t pay

What can I do if I can’t pay my rent?

Paying your rent is your responsibility. If you find it difficult to pay your rent or fall behind with payments you should contact us as soon as possible on 0800 876 6060. Stop your debts from getting out of control, come to us and we can help you work through your debts and support you along the way.

Three things to do if you can't pay your rent:
  1. Call your Tenancy and Neighbourhood Officer (TNO) to make them aware of your situation. With your TNO, you can talk over the situation and they will be able to offer you some advice and support. You can contact your TNO by calling 0800 876 6060 (free from a landline, if calling from a mobile please call 01628 543101).
  2. If you need assistance finding out what benefits you are entitled to, try www.nationaldebtline.co.uk where there is a helpline to support you with free confidential and independent advice.
  3. Talk to our dedicated Financial Inclusion Officer who can provide help and advice on benefits and money issues. They can help you to maximise your income and give advice on budgeting.

Please remember we are here to help you.

If you ignore your rent arrears we will begin proceedings to evict you from your home. Before we do this we will contact you to try and assist you. If you do not make payment, a Notice will be served on your tenancy and we will begin to take action in the county court to evict you.

Only you have the power to stop this byu working with us.

Please note, it’s not a good idea to borrow from money lenders to pay off any money you owe us or other people. They often charge higher interest charges than the high street lenders such as banks or building societies. This means you might end up owing a lot more money than you originally borrowed.
